Switches
We've been using Cisco Catalyst 3500 48 port switches. You can get them on ebay for $40ish. Though we might start upgrading to Dell 3048 or 3448s. One annoying thing about many switches is that when you plug in a new device the port goes through a long spanning tree protocol negotiation and the port is blocked for 30 seconds or more. You can skip this wait by using the spanning-tree portfast command. See
SwitchConfig for this and other helpful configuration examples.
Also sometimes the fans go out and you need to order new ones. The Cisco part number is: BFB1012M.
